My Japanese brush painting teacher says that on good days, her work is inspired from above. On bad days, it’s all due to her. I finally had a good day in sumie class, resulting in the paintings below. It was ironic that I was extremely stressed at work that day, and when I hit my limit, I swore to myself that I would leave for my class instead or working long hours. In class, I focused on grinding the ink, a meditation unto itself. As a scientist by trade, I tend to overthink instructions. This time, I relaxed and played, even experimenting with a signature. Japanese artists sign their work using a stamp in red ink, the Kanji characters symbolizing their personality. I asked my Japanese classmates to make a Kanji character for my name. Unfortunately, my name (Rachielle) is not easily translated nor pronounced in that language. So I dove into my own history and to my delight, discovered an indigenous form or writing. Baybayin is experiencing a revival in the Philippines, instilling pride in the culture before colonization.

An immigrant moves to another country to live there permanently. A refugee escapes the birth country because of political or religious persecution. Events such as war displace a country's citizens and endows them with a refugee status.

I immigrated to the United States in 1989. Later in the year, the Cold War ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall. As a teenager, I witnessed the upheaval of Philippine society with the overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. To this day, these two events define my perception of People Power.

In the summer of 1989, I landed in Los Angeles to the sound of the stewardess announcing,"Welcome to Los Angeles. It is 8:00 pm." I look out the window in disbelief. It was still light out, how could it be night time? In the Philippines, the sun sets at 6 pm.

I carried two large bags woven from native hemp material. In those bags, I packed as many clothes, books and souvenirs. I realized that they were too heavy, and I stopped to eye a long train of dollies. After some thought, I reached into my pocket and relinquished my one and only dollar to the slot, releasing a dolly to ease my burden. Thus, I arrived to America totally penniless.

My mom and uncle picked me up from the airport. "Did you receive the money I sent?" asked my mom. I shook my head. Back then snail mail took weeks, and wiring money was unheard of.

Although I spoke English and was armed with a college education, I was not immune to the prejudices that immigrants experience. I still remember the first time I walked into a supermarket. I was looking for oatmeal, and asked the clerk where I could find Quaker Oats. In the Filipino language, our vowels are rounded, A-E-I-O-U are pronounced as such. So the clerk heard "Quacker" when I asked for "Quaker." He finally understood what I meant when I said, "It's the oatmeal with the picture of an old man with a blue hat."

Even among Filipinos, there is a fine line between the locals, who were born here, and the FOBs. My cousin, although he was kind to me, explained that my accent gave me away as "fresh off the boat."

"But I came by plane," I protested, showing him the Philippine Airlines spoon that I kindly asked the stewardess to keep as a souvenir.

Acculturating took many years, and it still continues to the day. Some people think that the US is the greatest country in the world, with well-meant intentions as they welcome immigrants "to the land flowing with milk and honey". What they do not know is that people like me are lactose-intolerant, and honey is not as sweet as sugar cane.

Twenty eight years later, I realize that I have been in the United States longer than I have lived in my native country. I had come to love the country because this is my life now, the country where my children are born, and the country that rewards hard work and perseverance.

In the ongoing debates about immigration, many have spoken for the refugees and for the immigrants. In social media, a new term has arisen - craftivism. One calls for 3200 blankets to comprise 2000 miles, representing the border between the US and its southern neighbor. Each blanket, measuring 40" x 40", will be displayed in the Smart Museum in the University of Chicago. After the exhibit, the blankets will be distributed to a new immigrant or refugee.
https://www.welcomeblanket.org/

I started with the colors red white and blue - the colors of the US flag. Then I realized 3,199 other people might have that same idea. I decided to include the sun and stars from the Philippine flag. Coincidentally, while crocheting, I listened to an audiobook called "Forty Autumns,"by Nina Willner, which chronicled the stories of her family separated by the Berlin Wall. How timely is the reminder that instead of building walls, we must remember the famous challenge. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

This is my blanket, the fusion of my two cultures.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">There is something about being out of place that sparks joy. I still remember the first time I ever saw a yarnbomb. I didn't quite know what to make of a tree wrapped in its own sweater in the middle of summer. I realized that the closest storefront was a knitting shop. To this day, I smile whenever I think of that quaint tree in San Luis Obispo.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Many years later, I heard that this type of graffiti is called yarnbombing. I spotted flyers at the local libraries asking for contributions. I submitted a few knitted pieces that wrapped a bike rack and a bollard. A knitter since childhood, I had recently learned to crochet. At the Rancho Penasquitos Library yarnbomb, I found the perfect spot for my very first granny squares - the gate to the trash area! If I could make a glimmer of joy in someone's dreary task, I had done my job!

If you're ever in Old Poway Park, take a moment to enjoy it. Take a picture and tag it with #weddingtree #oldpowaypark. This park is a special place for my family, with memories of birthdays, lazy days, Civil War reenactments, Trainsong festivals, old fashioned-Fourth of July and Christmas. Making the wedding tree hopes to keep the rustic, 1860's feeling. When you're at the park, please also look for the Sweater Tree across the creek. My friend Sara yarnbombed it. She is an inspiration to me, as well as all the women in the Knitting Group.

The evolution of a cypress hedge to a yarn-bombed succulent garden is an exercise in the pursuit of happiness. It took my husband and son a few days to tear down the hedge and uproot the gnarly wood from the soil. Then, I planted the succulents. Each of my succulents came from someone I know - my mother, an aunt, a friend or a co-worker. It reminds me of a gardener friend who once said that all her friends are like the flowers in her garden. Each one is unique, and each one brings a different beauty to her life. The shells came from beaches in San Diego, and from a collection of our travels along the coast when the kids were younger and we took a lot of road trips. The sticks came from pruned branches from the bougainvillea and pepper trees from our yard. I let them dry for a few weeks, then knit little skinny scarves to wrap them around. Voila! A year later, a garden that makes me smile!

I've been knitting since I was eleven years old. I have always liked creating things with my hands, and my latest passion is yarnbombing. My local library had a campaign "Get Cozy with Your Library" for the summer reading program. I first saw yarnbombing on trees while on vacation in San Luis Obispo. Needless to say, I was thrilled at the concept of participating in a program like this. That probably explains why I haven't quilled in a while.

Advent is a special time in my family. For the four weeks before Christmas, we gather around our advent wreath in prayer. It is a simple green wreath with four candles. The first purple candle symbolizes HOPE in the coming of our Lord. The second purple candle symbolizes PEACE. The third candle is pink and gives us JOY, for the waiting is almost over. The fourth candle represents LOVE. These are the values we reflect on to prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ. This is our daily reminder to keep Christ in Christmas, and the keep holy during the holidays.Rachielle Shefflerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04953954064826451304noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-347041997780928131.post-833897388676138662012-10-15T20:55:00.000-07:002012-10-15T21:20:34.114-07:00Quilling a Tree

One of my teammates is a graphic artist and designed some cards that we embellished. I was excited putting a new spin on my quilling, collaborating with others and having fun! All for a good cause. Proceeds of all sales will go to our team for San Diego's 3-Day Walk for the Cure in November.
It seems like it was another lifetime. I was a mother of two young children. I was re-entering the workforce after years of being at home. After many years of being adrift, I was slowly returning to the faith of my childhood. At the age thirty-four, my life was just beginning. Yet for one of my dear childhood friends, it had come to an end.

My friend Florie May reminds me of the flowers that bloom in May, the month she was born. Her smile makes me think of the sunshine peculiar to this merry month. In the Philippines where we grew up, summer, or the dry season ended in May. I remember that the sunshine in May was strong but fleeting, trying to keep the June rain at arm's length. It was like my friend who graced this earth briefly.

Soon after she had a baby, May felt a lump. The doctor did a needle biopsy but was not able to aspirate any fluid for analysis. Being that she had no family history of breast cancer, the doctor thought that it was plainly a blocked milk duct. A few months, later, another doctor diagnosed her with Stage IV breast cancer. Within a year, her mother too was diagnosed. May bravely battled this disease, going into remission a few times. Her husband said that she had a bone marrow transplant, which was still experimental at that time. Despite the poor prognosis, May fought on for eight more years.

At one time, during a good moment, we reconnected. I told her that I missed her calls and letters. She told me that many times she felt angry. How could the rest of us go on and have normal lives while she was suffering so much? Did we even realize how cold her head got, having lost all her hair? No scarf, hat nor bandanna could make up for her own hair. Yet when she visited me a few years later, I did not detect any negative thought. She was beautiful, hopeful and happy. I looked forward to her moving to San Diego.
In 2002, just when I was waiting for a call that she was in town, I heard from another friend that May had gone home to the Philippines. She knew the end was near and wanted to be with her family. The following year, her mother too had passed. This year, her oldest sister succumbed to the disease.
This year too, my friend Michelle lost her cousin Joanna to breast cancer. Only thirty seven, Joanna left behind a husband and two small children. Despite her grief, my friend Michelle has channeled her energy into raising awareness. She will be doing the 3-Day Walk for the Cure in San Diego this November.
I have been quilling for seven years. This year, my passion came back with a desire to go above and beyond the usual stuff. I find a lot of inspiration in teaching the art. My daughter loves quilling with me. I discovered recently that she also is a good teacher, encouraging other children and grown-ups alike when she assisted in my last quilling class. She told me that when she grows up, she will teach her daughter as well.
I am in love with this new project! It brings quilling to a higher level of intricacy and artistry.
This is based on a video on how to make a "Royal Flower" using the husking technique.
I find a lot of inspiration in my Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/31795954879/. By far, the most interesting leaf making technique is in this blog: http://anastasiaw.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-to-make-quilled-leaf.html

I was so happy that I was able to follow the instructions and make my own special leaves! I still have to try this technique with a wide-tooth comb, as I used a very small one. Here are pictures of my first attempts:
The 2007 calendar included a tool and ideas. Each page had pre-cut strips to make the project design. I was so lucky to be part of this one and only calendar. The following year, Accord decided not to continue this endeavor.
So to speak, it is the calm before the storm of the holiday hustle and bustle. In October, I will be teaching another class to raise funds for breast cancer research. Here's a preview of the fall projects:
